Thank you – Volunteers/Guests for the Public Debate on Compulsory Voting, Sunday, November 1

The Claremont Colleges Debate Union held a public debate on Sunday, November 1. The topic was the following: “The United States should adopt compulsory voting in general elections.” Members of the Debate Union from Claremont McKenna Pitzer, and Pomona moderated and debated for the event. Trevor Christensen was the moderator/host; Naomi Tilles and Adarsh Srinivasan argued for the proposition and Nathaniel Braswell and Amari Huang debated on the opposition. All had exceptional performances.

The active audience, from more than a dozen high schools and colleges, had a significant role in the debate. They engaged debaters during a question and comment period in the middle of the debate – the audience clarified, challenged, and advanced issues. The audience participated in limited heckling, brief approval/disapproval of debater comments (limited online). Of course, the audience votes on the outcome of the debate. In this case, the audience voted for the opposition side in a close outcome.

Please join us for the next showcase public debate, which is scheduled for Sunday, November 22, 2:00 PM. The topic will be – “Presidential candidates should be required to play Jeopardy.”

The Zoom meeting id for November 22 is 830 1815 1773.
