The opening HSPDP league tournament is scheduled for Saturday, October 31. The event will be held online. In addition to Southern California high schools, East Coast HSPDP schools are welcome to attend the event.
The pre-announced topics for the event include:
- Viruses are alive!
- Decriminalize misdemeanor offenses.
Additional impromptu topics will be selected from current events and enduring ethical controversies.
Register with both League Presidents: Please send tournament registration to Katie Na, firstname.lastname@example.org, and Maya Kurkhill, email@example.com.
Note students eligible for novice awards (first semester of debating for Fall 2020). Please put an “N” after the name of any novice-eligible debater. Only high school students beginning debate participation in the fall term are eligible for novice awards. Exception – a student is eligible if they participated in one PDP tournament in Spring 2020.
Please use the form listed for registration on this site.
IMPORTANT – Entries will be accepted based on registration submission date/time. The deadline for registration is Wednesday, October 28, 6:00 PM. No cap on school registration at this time.
Required Judge Registration
Judges must complete registration prior to tournament judging. There is an expedited process for judges with prior experience from other debate formats. Prior participation in other debate formats does not suffice for PDP certification. Those new to judging complete certification during a tournament day and may judge at subsequent debate tournaments. They are not eligible to complete certification and judge at the same event.
Please ensure that your school has sufficient certified judging for entered teams (one judge for the full tournament covers 2 teams or portion thereof; for online debating, each judge covers the entry of 1 team). Individuals may not judge at a tournament at which they complete certified. Prospective judges complete certification at a tournament and then judge at subsequent debate tournaments.
Schools may register only those teams for which they have certified judges. In other words, if your school would like to register 4 teams, you must register 2 certified judges for an in-person event. Those judges must be available to judge all 4 debates. if your school would like to register 4 teams for an online event, you must register 4 certified judges. Those judges must be available to judge all 4 debates. If you would like your registered judges to have a free debate or two, you must register more of them.
If you are new to the HSPDP and do not have certified judges but would like to register teams, please contact the league presidents with this request.
