Register

There is no fee for the workshop. Please email John Meany, john.meany@cmc.edu, with the number of teachers and students attending from your school. It is not necessary to list the names of participants – the number of participants is sufficient.

Instruction is available for new and experienced teachers and students.

Directions and Parking

Please arrive at Bauer Forum, Claremont McKenna College, between 9:50-10:00 AM. A campus map is available at http://www.cmc.edu/about/campusmaps/print/printmap.php. Bauer Forum is #36 on the map. It is located at the east end of the campus, the first building on the left when entering the campus from Claremont Boulevard between Foothill Boulevard and 6th Street. Parking is available in the lots on the left of the street adjacent to Bauer Forum.

Please bring your lunch, as there will not be significant breaks during the workshop.

February 11 Tournament/Topics

The fourth HSPDP league invitational tournament for 2011-2012 will be held at Compton High School, Saturday, February 11, 2012.

The pre-announced topics for the tournament include the following:

1. The United States should tax capital gains at the same rate as ordinary income.

2. The US should establish term limits for Article III federal judges.

The tournament will include additional debates featuring impromptu topics on current events and important public policy controversies. Impromptu motions are announced 20 minutes prior to debates.

December 10 Tournament/Topics

The third HSPDP league invitational tournament for 2011-2012 will be held at Upland High School, Saturday, December 10.

The pre-announced topics for the tournament include the following:

1. States should abolish non-medical exemptions to mandatory immunization laws.

2.In cases of kidnapping or piracy, governments should pay ransom.

The tournament will include additional debates featuring impromptu topics on current events and important public policy controversies. Impromptu motions are announced 20 minutes prior to debates.

November 19 Tournament/Topics

The second HSPDP league invitational tournament for 2011-2012 will be held at The Webb Schools, Saturday, November 19.

The pre-announced topics for the tournament include the following:

1. US Supreme Court proceedings should be televised.

2. The US should not give development assistance to non-democratic governments.

The tournament will include additional debates featuring impromptu topics on current events and important public policy controversies. Impromptu motions are announced 20 minutes prior to debates.

The date of the opening HSPDP tournament has been changed from October 22 to Saturday, October 29 due to a facilities conflict on the earlier date.

1. The Untied States should implement the Keystone XL project.

2. Jury service should be optional.

The tournament will include additional debates featuring impromptu topics on current events and important public policy controversies. Impromptu motions are announced 20 minutes prior to debates.

Who: Any participating HSPDP school or high school interested in 2011-12 HSPDP programming may register…Each school may register up to 12 students and 3 teachers (one or more teachers must accompany students)

What: Debate Workshop – comprehensive format instruction for new and experienced debaters, as well as a coaching session; elective sessions for debaters include the following:

Understanding the High School Public Debate Program Format
Taking Winning Notes
Research
Basic and Advanced Argumentation
The Art of Rebuttal
Advanced Debating Techniques

2011-12 Calendar Announced

The preliminary 2011-2012 calendar is announced. The HSPDP league calendar includes 2 instructional workshops and 6 interscholastic tournaments, including the championship event in April. Additional HSPDP events – public debates, guest lectures, and international format competitions – will be announced during the year.

High school sites may begin volunteering to host tournaments.
