Fees

• There is a $50 school fee for ALL attending institutions. The fee can be paid prior to the event or during tournament registration. Checks are payable to “Claremont McKenna College.”

• Institutions must have paid 2011-2012 HSPDP dues to participate. If there is a difficulty with payment or it will be unavoidably delayed, please contact John Meany prior to the tournament.

Brunch Registration

The award-winning Collins Dining Hall at Claremont McKenna College will be available for brunch during the tournament. The per-person fee for brunch, a delicious and diverse buffet menu and all-you-can-eat, is $12.00. Brunch fees will be collected during registration. Coachers should organize meals for their institution and pay at one time during registration. Tickets are issued for access to the dining hall for lunch.

There is limited access to the dining hall this year. There is space for debaters, judges, and the coach (if the coach is not judging at the event) for each entered school. There is time for observers to walk to other college dining halls or leave and return for brunch.

The pre-announced topics for the tournament include the following:

1. Political advertising does more good than harm.

2. California should eliminate Prop 13.

3. Saudi Arabia is more an enemy than an ally of the United States.

The tournament will include additional debates featuring impromptu topics on current events and important public policy controversies. Impromptu motions are announced 20 minutes prior to debates.

• States should allow cell phone use in prison.
• The US should televise the executions of condemned prisoners.
• Students should be allowed to carry registered guns on a college/university campus.
• States should require drug tests to receive welfare benefits.
• Tax increases are good for America.
• The US should establish a national DNA database of all residents.

HSPDP Information

Students participating in the High School Public Debate Program (HSPDP) are eligible to complete judge certification and participate at the middle school championship. Students must be enrolled in 10th-12th grade for eligibility. If a school has interested students, please contact John Meany, john.meany@cmc.edu, to arrange a certification session.

The invitation for the HSPDP Championship will be posted on Monday, March 5. The event is scheduled for Sunday, April 22, 2012, Claremont McKenna College.

There is no fee for the workshop. Please email John Meany, john.meany@cmc.edu, with the number of teachers and students attending from your school. It is not necessary to list the names of participants – the number of participants is sufficient.

Please arrive at Bauer Forum, Claremont McKenna College, between 9:50-10:00 AM. A campus map is available at http://www.cmc.edu/about/campusmaps/print/printmap.php. Bauer Forum is #36 on the map. It is located at the east end of the campus, the first building on the left when entering the campus from Claremont Boulevard between Foothill Boulevard and 6th Street. Parking is available in the lots on the left of the street adjacent to Bauer Forum.
